How to install/reinstall Windows XP
Requirements: (OS)Windows XP CD or Bootable Windows XP USB
Maybe old nowadays, but it was one of the most used operating systems. It is still used by many users and indeed... it is one of the best Operating systems by microsoft.
Compared with Windows 7/Vista, the windows XP installation may be/look a bit more difficult, but of course... it is older. Generally it is simple, just follow the steps below:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD in your CD/DVD-ROM.
2. Boot from the CD. [how to?]
If the boot settings are set correctly in the BIOS, the text as shown on the image above should appear. Press any key to start the installation.
3. Wait couple of seconds/munutes while installation loads some files and checks the hardware.
4. Push the enter key to continue with the installation.
(Note: If you don't get the text shown as on the image above then you may have hardware problems, in that case read this post.)
5. Push the F8 key to continue.
6. Press Esc. (you may not get the text like on the image below)
7. (a) If you're installing windows xp first time or your hard disk drive(HDD) is new you'll see 'unpartitioned space'. If this is your case, you need to create partitions.
It is recommended to have at least two partitions. [What are partitions?]
7.1 In order to create partitions press C. The total amount of space calculated in megabytes(MB's) will appear.(10519 megabytes in my case, little amount of space)
Split the number into two nearly equal numbers/halves(Eg. if 512000, type 250000) and press enter.
7.2 The first created partition will be labeled as C:. Now, navigate to the unpartitioned space once more and press C in order to create the another partition, the remaining amount of space will be shown, just press enter. It's done, you created at least two partitions.
(b) If you're reinstalling windows, you'll see all of your partitions.(in this example i have 2 small partitions C: and E:) If this is your case, continue with step 8.
8. Select the partition(usually it's C:\) where windows was or it is still installed and push the enter key.

(If you want to install windows xp as a secondary OS, select different partition and push the enter key. This is not recommended if you're reinstalling windows cause of viruses !)
9. Press the C key to continue.
10. Select 'format the partition using the NTFS file system', you can select Quick if your PC/HDD is not too old. Please note if you format the partition, unfortunatelly all the data within will be deleted.
11. Wait couple of minutes while partition is being formated.
12. Once the formatting is finished the core files are being copied, wait couple of minutes.
13. Once the files are copied, press enter or wait 15 seconds to reboot/restart in order to continue with the installation. Once restarted, don't do/press anything, just wait until you get the image shown on the next step.
14. The second part of the installation will start. Just wait some time.
15. A window will appear, just click on 'Next'.
16. Enter your/any name and click on 'Next.
17. Enter your Windows's serial key and click next. ( The serial key can be found under the laptop, cd case, box, sticked on the back of your computer.)
If you want to add a password which will ask for every time before logging into windows type it on 'Administrator password' and on 'Confirm password'. (can be added lately)
19. Adjust the date&time&timezone, click on 'Next'.
20. Select 'typical settings' and click on 'Next'. (This prompt may not appear.)
21. Click on 'Next'. (can be changed lately)
22. Wait couple of seconds until installation finishes. At the finish it may restart. If restarted, just wait until you get the prompt from the next step.
23. Click on 'Ok'.
24. As it says, if you see the message click on 'Ok'. If you don't see anything, just wait.
25. Almost done, just click on 'Next'.
26. Select 'Help protect my pc by turning on Automatic updates now' and click on 'Next. (Can be changed lately via control panel)
27. Click on 'Skip'.
28. If you don't have registered your Windows with microsoft, it is recommended to register your product ! If you already have registered your product select 'No, not at this time' and click on next.
(If registration could not be done now, you can do that lately.)
29. Enter your/any name and click on 'Next'
30. Click on 'Finish'.
31. It's done ! It should log you into windows.
Next you need to do is install your drivers. If you have trouble read this post about installing/finding your drivers.
After drivers are installed, if you reinstalled the windows cause of viruses, just download an Anti-Virus software immediately, install&update it and perform a full scan !
If you didn't format all the partitions, they may contain viruses and may infect/damage the windows again !
Also do not plug in any USB Flash Drives until you install an Anti-Virus software, they may be infected !
Hope this helps,
Good luck ! : )
